NFF Debunks Fake FIFA Letter as Nigerian Delegation Meets Infantino in Zurich
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed as fake a letter purportedly from FIFA that was seeking clarification over alleged government interference in the federation’s affairs.

In a statement released on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the NFF said the document circulating in sections of the media did not originate from the world football governing body.

“The NFF has debunked news of a ‘letter’ circulating in sections of the media as being from world football governing body, FIFA. It is totally fake. FIFA has already accepted the resignations of former principal officers and Members of the NFF Exco,” the federation stated.

The clarification comes as a high-level Nigerian delegation met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Zurich, Switzerland.

The delegation was led by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, and the Director-General, Bukola Olopade. Former NFF President and ex-FIFA Council member, Amaju Pinnick, was also in attendance.

Discussions at the meeting centred on the ongoing restructuring of Nigerian football and the recent leadership changes within the NFF.

The meeting follows the resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and members of his Executive Committee, amid growing concerns over the state of Nigerian football. The federation has since appointed Emmanuel Ikpeme as interim General Secretary and Ademola Olajire as interim Deputy General Secretary.

The development is coming after President Bola Tinubu called for comprehensive reforms in Nigerian football following what he described as “repeated failures.”

The fake FIFA letter had alleged that the world body was concerned about Gusau’s resignation and government interference, warning of possible sanctions for breach of FIFA’s statutes on the independence of member associations.

The NFF, however, insists the letter is false and that FIFA is fully aware of and has accepted the recent resignations.
