FG Denies Involvement In Failed Niger Republic Coup Attempt
The Federal Government has denied any involvement in the recent failed military coup in Niger Republic, describing reports linking Nigeria to the plot as false and mischievous.

In a press statement signed by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, and made available to newsmen in Lokoja, the government said such claims circulating on social media were aimed at tarnishing Nigeria’s image.

The statement noted that the Ministry’s attention had been drawn to claims suggesting that the failed coup had the backing of ECOWAS and, by insinuation, the endorsement of Nigeria.

Reacting, the Federal Government categorically rejected the allegations as “baseless, irresponsible, and a deliberate attempt to misinform the public”.

The minister emphasized that Nigeria remains a peace-loving nation and a defender of constitutional order, stressing that it would never support illegality or unconstitutional change of government anywhere.

He added that Nigeria’s position was already made clear in its official Press Statement No: MFA/PR/2026/220 of 30 August 2026, where it expressed deep concern over the situation in Niger and called for a peaceful and inclusive return to stability and constitutional order.
