Millions Lost As Fire Guts Kofar Wambai Market In Kano
Property worth millions of Naira has been destroyed following a fresh fire outbreak at the popular Kofar Wambai Market in Kano State.

The fire, which started on Friday night between 9:00 pm and 10:00 pm, affected the Babban Layi and Yan Robobi sections of the market.

According to reports, about six houses used mostly as shops and warehouses for plastics were affected. The affected buildings were identified as Gidan Alhaji Sani, Gidan Sani Muhammad, Gidan Alhaji Kwa Kwa, Gidan Alhaji Shafi’u, and Gidan Alhaji Sulaiman.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said the fire started from the upper floor of one of the buildings and spread downwards.

He disclosed that the inferno affected two shops on the ground floor, two shops on the first floor, six stores, and four temporary stores on the upper floor.

The Fire Service traced the cause of the outbreak to a solar panel installation in the affected area.

Firefighters from the Service Headquarters, Rijiyar Zaki, Sabon Gari, Government House, and Bompai Fire Stations were deployed to the scene and succeeded in preventing the fire from spreading to other parts of the market.

Reacting to the incident, the Director of Kano Fire Service, Sani Anas, appealed to traders and residents to be more vigilant and to adopt proactive safety measures to prevent fire outbreaks.

He also advised traders and homeowners to install fire detectors and keep functional fire extinguishers in their shops and homes.
