Amusan Wins $75,000 After Claiming Silver at World Athletics Ultimate Championship

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan finished with a silver medal and a $75,000 prize at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary on Friday.

Amusan clocked 12.34 seconds in the women’s 100m hurdles final to place second behind America’s Olympic champion Masai Russell, who stormed to victory in 12.22 seconds to take home the $150,000 top prize.

The former world record holder had booked her place in the final after finishing second in her semi-final heat in 12.49s, just behind Bahamian Devynne Charlton who won the race in 12.45s. Charlton eventually finished fourth in the final with 12.40s. Netherlands’ Nadine Visser completed the podium in third.

The silver caps off a challenging season for Amusan, who held the world record for four years with her famous 12.12s run at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, before losing it to Russell. Russell broke the record in Zurich last month with a stunning 12.09s at the Letzigrund Stadium.

It is the third straight time this season that Russell has finished ahead of Amusan, after beating her in Zurich and at the Diamond League Final in Brussels.
