An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Alwan Hassan, has said that academic qualifications alone do not determine good leadership in Nigeria.
Hassan made the statement on Monday while speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, where he dismissed the ongoing debate around President Bola Tinubu’s academic credentials.
According to him, the educational qualifications of key opposition figures have not translated into better governance or political impact for the country.
“Tell me what Jonathan’s PhD has done to Nigeria. Tell me how Obi’s degree (BSc) has helped improve his communication skills. Tell me what it has done to Atiku to help him navigate and know the time to contest or when to concede for the best person of the time,” Hassan said.
The APC member argued that the opposition has failed to offer concrete criticism of Tinubu’s administration and is instead fixated on his academic background.
He also defended President Tinubu over the controversy surrounding his Chicago State University certificate submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Hassan insisted that there is no official statement from Chicago State University declaring the certificate forged.
“There is nowhere that Chicago State University says the certificate President Tinubu submitted to INEC is forged. What the Constitution says is a school certificate or its equivalent. An equivalent of a school certificate is the ability to read and write,” he stated.
He concluded that leadership should be assessed based on performance and results, not just degrees and certificates.
