2027: Lose Your LGA, Lose Your Job — Gov Nwifuru Warns Ebonyi Council Chairmen

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has threatened to sack any local government chairman who fails to deliver his council area to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

The governor issued the warning on Tuesday in Abakaliki, the state capital, while inaugurating the newly elected chairmen and vice-chairmen of the state’s 13 Local Government Areas.

Nwifuru said the performance of the APC in the next election will be tied directly to the council bosses, and any chairman who fails to secure victory in his domain will be removed and replaced with a councillor.

“Any chairman who fails to win his council will be removed from office and replaced with a councillor. I want this information to be on the headlines of newspapers because, as politicians, we would not speak in secret,” the governor said.

He added, “The chairmen know we would win in the state, and if they choose to sleep and allow others to take their areas, they would be removed.”

The governor charged the new chairmen to consolidate the APC’s dominance at the grassroots and not allow opposition parties to gain ground in their areas.

He also cautioned them against internal rifts, urging them to work closely with their deputies.

Nwifuru advised the vice-chairmen to be loyal and supportive to their principals and avoid gossip capable of destroying their working relationship.

He cited his deputy as an example, noting that her track record as a former council chairman proved her capacity for higher office.

Responding on behalf of his colleagues, the chairman of Afikpo LGA, Timothy Nwachi, thanked the governor and the APC leadership for the opportunity to serve and pledged that the chairmen would deliver a landslide victory for the party in 2027.

Among those inaugurated are Osborne Umahi, son of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, and Chidi Nwode, brother of the governor’s wife.
