2027: Obi Supporters Will Protect Votes at Polling Units, Won’t Rely on INEC Alone – Aisha Yesufu
Political activist and chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Aisha Yesufu, says supporters of Peter Obi will not depend solely on electoral institutions to protect their votes in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Yesufu said the lessons from the 2023 election have made it necessary for supporters to organize at the grassroots and provide direct monitoring of the process.

According to her, Obi’s supporters plan to deploy representatives to every polling unit to monitor voting and follow election materials and result sheets through all stages of collation – from wards and local governments to state centres and up to the final declaration in Abuja.

“We are going to have people at every polling unit to protect the votes. No result sheet will leave our sight. We will follow the results from the polling units all the way to Abuja,” she said.

Yesufu said the aim is to ensure the final results announced reflect the actual votes cast at the polling units. She stated that she has “zero trust” in INEC, security agencies and the judiciary to solely safeguard the votes, hence the need for citizen-led vigilance.

She urged supporters to prioritize polling-unit organization over just rallies and campaign events ahead of 2027.

Reacting to the reported obstruction of Obi’s movement in Benue State, Yesufu defended his decision not to confront those who blocked his convoy, saying he had other engagements and should not allow “miscreants” to dictate his movements.

She also expressed optimism about Obi’s chances in 2027, citing economic hardship, insecurity and declining purchasing power as major concerns for voters. She described the Tinubu administration as a “colossal failure,” arguing that reported improvements in macro-economic indicators have not translated to better living conditions.

According to her, voters are now focusing more on competence, character and capacity.

Yesufu, who said she is not contesting for any elective position, said her focus remains on mobilising supporters and ensuring votes are protected, including retaining Lagos and making gains in other parts of the country.
