AFN President Okowa Eyes Podium Finish at 2027 World Championships in China
President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Tonobok Okowa, says the federation will now shift full focus to the 2027 World Athletics Championships in China, following Nigeria’s encouraging outing at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Okowa said despite visa hitches and other challenges that almost affected Nigeria’s participation in Budapest, the young Nigerian contingent showed resilience, making the final in four out of the five events the country entered.
Former world record holder, Tobi Amusan, led the charge with a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles, while sprinter Kanyinsola Ajayi impressed with a fourth-place finish in the men’s 100m, just outside the medals.
According to Okowa, the performances have given the federation confidence ahead of next year’s global showpiece.
“The team to Budapest is a young one. The World Championship in China next year is the AFN’s big focus. We will continue to work with these athletes, identify areas that need improvement and prepare them properly,” Okowa said.
The AFN boss praised the athletes for their courage and competitive spirit, noting that reaching four finals is a clear sign Nigeria can compete with the world’s best.
He also disclosed that quarter-miler Samuel Ogazi, Nigeria’s fastest man over 400m this season, missed the Budapest championship due to a toe injury, adding that his return will further strengthen the team for 2027.
Okowa added that the AFN will take lessons from Budapest to ensure better preparation and improved performance in China.
