ASUU Shuts Down Cross River Varsity Over Unmet Demands
Academic activities have been paralyzed at the Cross River University of Education and Entrepreneurship (UEE), Akamkpa, following a 14-day warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UEE Branch.

The industrial action, which commenced on September 10, 2026, comes after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum earlier issued to the university management and the state government.

In a statement jointly signed by the Branch Chairperson, Comrade Valentine Ntui, PhD, and Secretary, Comrade Imoke Etorti, PhD, the union said the decision followed resolutions from the Emergency National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU held on September 5, and the Emergency Congress of the UEE Branch held on September 9, 2026.

According to the union, none of its four cardinal demands has been addressed:
1. Correction of CONUASS implementation and payment of outstanding salary arrears 2. Implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement, particularly the CATA component 3. Implementation of the harmonized 70-year retirement age for Professors and Associate Professors 4. Urgent intervention to address excessive workload and critical shortage of academic staff
The union directed all its members to fully withdraw their services for the duration of the strike until a meaningful resolution is reached.

The Branch Chairperson, Dr. Ntui, noted that the decision was not taken lightly, adding that the union remains open to dialogue and constructive engagement.

“We urge all members to remain united, disciplined and resolute as we collectively defend the dignity of our profession, the welfare of our members and the integrity of the University system,” he said.

The strike will affect hundreds of students at the Akamkpa-based state-owned institution.
