Benue Govt Orchestrated Blockade to Stop Peter Obi — Sowore Alleges
Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has accused the Benue State Government of orchestrating the blockade that stopped Mr. Peter Obi’s convoy from entering Makurdi, the state capital.

Peter Obi’s convoy was reportedly stopped on Tuesday along Gboko Road while on a condolence visit to victims of killings in Benue. A crowd of youths was said to have barricaded the road near the Nigerian Air Force Base and chanting “Peter Obi, go back,” disrupting his movement.

Reacting to the incident, Sowore said the presence of a Special Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Alia among the protesters points to government involvement.

“The clearer indication that the government was involved was made available by Mr. Peter Obi himself, who stated clearly that one of the special advisers to the governor was seen as part of the crowd that was chanting, ‘Peter Obi, go back.’”

Sowore stressed that political differences should not be used to deny any Nigerian their constitutional right to move freely and campaign anywhere in the country.

“My differences are ideological with him. If I am President of Nigeria, you can be guaranteed that your rights are protected whether you are a Jew or a Gentile,” he said.

He condemned the threat to Obi’s safety and called for those responsible to be identified and sanctioned.

“I don’t wish him death. I don’t want any harm to come upon him, any member of his delegation, or his campaign team wherever they go in Nigeria,” Sowore said.

He warned that if the act goes unpunished, political intimidation could escalate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“They are just testing the waters. If this works, then nobody is safe; you will find more of these kinds of intimidation attacks, and it will quickly snowball into assassinations,” he warned.
