Leverkusen Coach Explains Boniface Europa League Omission
Bayer Leverkusen manager, Carles Martinez, has explained why Nigerian striker Victor Boniface was left out of the club’s squad for the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League.

Martinez gave the explanation on Friday, ahead of Leverkusen’s Bundesliga clash against Union Berlin on Saturday.

Despite impressing in pre-season after a difficult loan spell at Werder Bremen in the 2025/26 season, Boniface was a notable absentee from Leverkusen’s Europa League squad list.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Martinez revealed the decision was fitness-related, noting that the striker had not fully recovered from his knee problems.
“Two months ago, when we began our preparations, this question was unexpected. He wasn’t ready; he was experiencing pain, his knee was not in good condition, and physically, he was significantly behind,” Martinez said as quoted by Kicker.
The Leverkusen boss, however, expressed optimism that the 24-year-old is making progress and could still return to his best form.
“The positive aspect is that his knee is responding better. There are still some minor issues from time to time, but overall, it is much improved. Such a talent deserves a better year, not just this year, but throughout his career,” he added.
Martinez also did not rule out a return to the European squad later in the season if Boniface continues to improve.
“I hope you can inquire about the reason for this decision every week, as Boni continues to improve. That would be the best outcome for both him and the club,” he said.
“In many matches, when we require a goal, Boni is on my mind. We will assist him in his development, and I hope that in the coming months or by the end of the season, we can say: Boni is at 100 percent”.
Boniface will now focus on regaining full fitness in the Bundesliga as he eyes a comeback to the European stage.
