Mary Njoku Calls Out Double Standard In Labeling Women As Gold Diggers

Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Mary Njoku has triggered a fresh conversation online after questioning the double standard in how society labels women who benefit from wealthy men.

Taking to her social media page, the ROK TV boss wondered why women are quickly tagged as “gold diggers” for enjoying a man’s wealth, while men who enjoy similar benefits from their wealthy male friends are given respectable names.

According to her, attraction to value is human nature and not gender-specific. She argued that everyone — men, women, friends, relatives, and even employees — naturally gravitates towards people and things that make life better.

Mary noted that the real issue is not that people love money, but the hypocrisy in how society names the behaviour depending on who is involved.

In her words:
“If benefiting from a wealthy person’s generosity makes a woman a gold digger, what exactly do we call the 17 men eating his food, wearing what he bought, enjoying his money and calling themselves his boys?”

“The truth is, people gravitate towards value. Men do it. Women do it. Friends do it. Relatives do it. Employees do it. Everyone wants to be close to something that makes life better.”

“The double standard isn’t that people love money. It’s that when men benefit from proximity to wealth, we give the behaviour a respectable name. When women do the same thing, we give it a dirty one.”

“Everyone loves gold. The difference is in what we choose to call the people standing close to it.”
Her statement has since sparked mixed reactions online, with many users debating gender roles, money, and societal expectations in relationships.
