Morocco Names Casablanca as Venue for 2030 World Cup Final

The 2030 FIFA World Cup final will be held in Casablanca, the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, has announced.

Lekjaa made the disclosure on Thursday while speaking at a political party event in Bouznika, Morocco, according to Spanish news agency EFE.

“The province of Benslimane will have the honour of hosting the 2030 World Cup final,” Lekjaa was quoted as saying.

Benslimane, a city located about 60km from Casablanca, is the site of the $12-billion Grand Stade Hassan II, currently under construction for the tournament. The stadium is projected to have a capacity of 115,000 and will be the largest football-specific stadium in the world.

FIFA has yet to officially announce the venue for the final, as Spain and Morocco are in a heated battle to host football’s biggest showpiece match.

The 2030 World Cup will be historic, with matches to be held across six countries in three continents for the first time. While the opening three games will take place in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, the majority of the tournament will be co-hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain.

Both Morocco and Spain want the final, with the President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Rafael Louzan, previously insisting “Spain should host the final”. FIFA had in August dismissed reports that its President, Gianni Infantino, had promised the final to Morocco as “false and misleading”.
