Police Clarify IGP Disu’s Stand On Filming Officers: Citizens Can Record, But Not For Skits

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified the position of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on citizens recording police officers while on duty.

The Force said IGP Disu is not opposed to citizens documenting police activities in public for accountability purposes.

According to the clarification, his concern is about the growing trend of turning such recordings into skits, entertainment and social media content.

The IGP had earlier noted that the practice of indiscriminately recording officers has become demoralising to personnel, especially those deployed to checkpoints, highways and other high-risk areas.

“We are not saying they cannot exercise their rights of recording officers in public places while doing their jobs,” Disu was quoted as saying, while urging restraint. “But they should put restraints and not turn our police officers to content for their skits or anything.”

The Force New Media Officer, Aliyu Giwa, further explained that the IGP’s worry is the misuse of recordings when encounters are deliberately staged for content creation rather than legitimate documentation.

The clarification has sparked mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians saying it strikes a fair balance between accountability and respect for officers on duty.
