Scottish Brothers Olly and Seb Fisher Close to Uganda Debut Through Mother
Teenage brothers Olly and Seb Fisher are on the verge of making their international debuts for Uganda after receiving invitations to train with the country’s youth teams.
The siblings, who play for Scottish club Partick Thistle, qualify to represent the East African nation through their mother, Kate, who was born in Uganda.
Olly, 18, is a goalkeeper while his younger brother Seb, 16, plays as a striker. Olly has been training with Uganda’s U-20 team, while Seb has been with the U-17s.
According to a report by BBC Sport, the brothers first learned of Uganda’s interest about six months ago after their father spoke with a football consultant at a match in Nigeria. This led to an invite to a training camp in August where they spent a week in Jinja, in eastern Uganda.
Olly described the call-up as a shock and an honour, saying he never thought it was a possibility but saw it as a big opportunity. Seb said he also struggled to believe it was real at first.
Their family has deep ties to Uganda. Their grandparents lived in the country for several years after their grandfather moved there to teach, and their mother was born there during that time.
Uganda U-20 head coach and former Hearts and Ghana international Laryea Kingston has welcomed the duo. The brothers revealed that Kingston told them they could become the first white players to represent Uganda – a claim that has not been independently verified.
Both players say they have settled in quickly thanks to the warm welcome from their teammates, some of whom hail from the same area where their mother was born.
The pair are now targeting competitive caps. Olly is hoping to make the squad if Uganda qualifies for next year’s U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, while Seb is eyeing a place in the U-17 team for the World Cup in Qatar this November.
They said the international experience will help their development when they return to Scotland to continue their football and education at Partick Thistle.
