Tinubu Orders Comprehensive Overhaul of Nigerian Football Over Repeated Qualification Failures
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football following the country’s repeated failures to qualify for major regional, continental and global tournaments.

The President gave the directive in a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. He directed the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC) to work with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Secretariat and other relevant stakeholders to drive the reforms.

According to President Tinubu, the reform must address longstanding structural weaknesses in the system, including governance, administration, stakeholder representation, player development pathways, domestic competitions, and accountability.

The President noted that despite being Nigeria’s most popular sport and enjoying huge public support, investment and national attention, football has continued to struggle due to structural deficits.

He said Nigerian football must now translate the country’s abundant talent, passion and resources into stronger institutions and sustained performance on the pitch.

Tinubu further directed that the reform process should ensure continuity in football administration, involve broad consultation with stakeholders, and include appropriate engagement with FIFA and CAF while protecting Nigeria’s obligations under the international football framework.

He called on all football stakeholders and Nigerians to support the transition to build a stronger, more accountable football system capable of delivering sustained success.
