The Yobe State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Mohammed Gadaka, has come under heavy criticism after urging married women to leave their husbands if they stop them from voting for the APC.

Gadaka made the controversial comment on Thursday in Nangere town while receiving hundreds of defectors into the APC. According to reports, he told women whose husbands opposed their support for the party to divorce them, adding that he would pay their bride price and marry any woman who took such a step.

The statement sparked outrage among residents and Islamic scholars who described it as reckless and provocative, warning that it could undermine family values.

Following the backlash, Gadaka withdrew the statement and tendered an apology in a 42-second video shared on the Facebook page of the Director General, Press and Media Affairs to Governor Mai Mala Buni, Mamma Mohammed.

He explained that his remark was misconstrued and was only meant as a joking banter rooted in the age-long teasing tradition between his Ngamo people and the Kare Kare-speaking people.

In his words:
“My statement was just a usual joking banter and does not in any way represent the ideals I stand for or intended to encourage divorce among married people. I offer apologies for my statement, and I hereby withdraw it.”
