Neymar Still Holds World Record as Football Transfer Fees Skyrocket
Football’s transfer market has entered a new era of massive spending, but one record still stands tall.
Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr. remains the most expensive player in football history, following his £200 million move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017. The deal, which saw PSG activate his release clause, broke the £200m barrier for the first time and changed the economics of elite football forever.
Close behind him is Kylian Mbappé, whose 2017 move from Monaco to PSG eventually cost around £163m-£166m, giving PSG the top two most expensive transfers of all time.
Former Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho is third on the all-time list after his £142 million transfer to Barcelona in 2018.
The rest of the top 10 shows how much the market has inflated in recent years:
Top 10 Most Expensive Football Transfers in History:
1. Neymar – Barcelona to PSG (2017) – £200m 2. Kylian Mbappé – Monaco to PSG (2017) – £166m 3. Philippe Coutinho – Liverpool to Barcelona (2018) – £142m 4. Ousmane Dembélé – Dortmund to Barcelona (2017) – £136m 5. Enzo Fernández – Chelsea to Manchester City (2026) – £125m 6. Alexander Isak – Newcastle to Liverpool (2025) – £125m 7. Other huge recent deals like Florian Wirtz to Liverpool (£116.5m) and Bradley Barcola’s £123m move have also pushed the £100m mark to become the new normal.
What was once considered unimaginable — a £100m transfer — is now regularly surpassed for elite young talent. Yet, almost a decade later, Neymar’s £200m mountain remains unclimbed.
