Aruna Backs Eko 2026 Games, Says Event Will Discover Future Stars
Africa’s table tennis number one, Quadri Aruna, has endorsed the maiden National Intermediate Games, Eko 2026, saying the tournament will help discover Nigeria’s next generation of sports talents.

The Games are scheduled to hold in Lagos from October 1 to 15, 2026, with over 15,000 athletes from across the country expected to compete in 28 sports across 10 venues.

Aruna gave his endorsement during a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, who also serves as Chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee for the Games. He was accompanied by his wife, Ganiat, and their children.

According to Aruna, the initiative is key to reviving Nigerian sports through grassroots development.

“Sports in Nigeria has faced challenges, but this initiative is the best way to restore our lost glory,” Aruna said.

The Oyo-born star, who started playing table tennis at age seven in his hometown, also praised Lagos State for its continued support for sports under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, noting the role the state played in his own journey to stardom.

He urged young athletes billed to participate to give their best and see the platform as a learning opportunity.

“They should embrace it, give their best, enjoy the experience, and learn as much as possible to succeed in life,” he said.

“This event is for all Nigerian youths. They must be disciplined, determined, and eager to learn, and believe in themselves. Just as people say ‘Oyo to the World,’ they too can rise from their towns to the world stage.”

In his response, Omotoso said Aruna’s endorsement is symbolic and will serve as a big motivation to the young athletes.

“His endorsement shows what is possible when you put your mind to something. Aruna himself started just like many of the athletes who will compete. Seeing him encourage them will inspire energy, determination, and purpose,” Omotoso said.
