Security Agencies Dismiss Report of 37 Deaths from Toxic Fumes at Okrika Jetty
Security agencies have debunked reports claiming that 37 persons died after inhaling toxic fumes at the Okrika Jetty in Okrika Mainland, Rivers State.

The report, which went viral on Thursday, had alleged that the incident occurred on September 3, 2026.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the LightHope Succor Worldwide Initiative and signed by its Spokesperson, Evelyn Williams, the organization contacted senior officials of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Navy, and the Nigerian Army who have jurisdiction over the area.

The security authorities confirmed that no such incident occurred at the jetty on the said date.

“Consequently, our preliminary investigation has been unable to establish the veracity of the reported 37 fatalities. The information obtained from the relevant security authorities instead indicates that the report is fake news and without credible factual basis,” LightHope said.

The group challenged the originators of the viral report to provide verifiable evidence to support the claim of mass casualties and urged media organizations to conduct thorough editorial checks before publishing sensitive reports involving loss of lives.

It however clarified that its findings should not be seen as dismissing the real environmental and security challenges facing the Niger Delta, including oil theft, pipeline vandalism and related activities. It said the call was for accuracy and evidence-based reporting.

LightHope added that it would continue to promote community welfare, environmental responsibility and public safety in the Niger Delta region.
