Bishop Kawas Defends Support For Tinubu, Recalls Backing Peter Obi Despite “I No Dey Give Shishi” Stance
The President of the Charismatic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, Bishop Leonard Kawas, has explained his group’s decision to endorse President Bola Tinubu, comparing it to their support for Labour Party candidate Peter Obi in the 2023 general elections.
Speaking on their political choices, Bishop Kawas recalled that Peter Obi had openly stated he would not share money to supporters during his campaign, yet the group still backed him.
“When we supported Peter Obi [in 2023]. He made it clear that he was not going to give anybody money — he said, ‘I no dey give shishi.’ Yet that did not stop us from supporting him. Today, this endorsement [of President Tinubu] has not given us even one naira!” he said.
The clergyman stressed that neither endorsement was motivated by financial gain, noting that their support for Tinubu has also not come with any monetary reward.
His remarks have since generated mixed reactions on social media, with many Nigerians questioning the role of religious leaders in partisan politics and debating the monetization of political endorsements.
