Adeyanju Urges Tinubu to Declare State of Emergency on Fake Drugs
Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on fake and substandard drugs and products in the country.
Adeyanju, who made the call in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, warned that Nigerians are exposed daily to dangerous and counterfeit medicines and consumer goods.
The lawyer also demanded the immediate removal of the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, and heads of other regulatory bodies including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), over alleged regulatory failure.
According to him, NAFDAC appears incapable of curbing the proliferation of fake and substandard products, a situation he said has exposed Nigerians to unsafe medicines, including drugs sold in the open market under excessive heat.
“No responsible government should expose its citizens to such risks and expect mortality rates not to rise,” Adeyanju said.
He accused the regulatory agencies of failing in their core mandate of consumer protection and urged President Tinubu to overhaul their leadership and appoint competent persons capable of restoring effective regulation and enforcement.
Adeyanju stressed that the scale of counterfeit drugs in circulation points to serious systemic weaknesses and called on the Federal Government to treat the issue as a national emergency.
“Nigerians cannot continue to pay with their lives for regulatory failure,” he added.
