FG Launches VitalReg: Nigerians Can Now Register Births and Deaths Online
The National Population Commission (NPC) has unveiled a digital platform that allows Nigerians to register births and deaths online and obtain certificates electronically.

The platform, named VitalReg, operates under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system. It became fully operational nationwide on July 1, 2026, covering all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to the Commission, the initiative is aimed at modernizing Nigeria’s civil registration system, reducing delays associated with manual processes, and improving the accuracy of data used for national planning and identity management.
Through VitalReg, citizens no longer need to rely solely on physical visits to NPC offices. The platform offers online access, digital certificate issuance where applicable, improved data validation, and a more secure database for civil records.
The NPC noted that Nigeria still struggles with incomplete documentation of births and deaths, which affects population data and planning for healthcare, education and other public services.
How to register a birth on VitalReg:
1. Create an account: Visit the NPC online service portal and sign up with your name, email address and National Identification Number (NIN), then complete facial verification to access your dashboard.
2. Start application: After logging in, select birth registration and begin a new application.
3. Provide details: Enter required information about the child and parent(s). For self-service, the child must have been born in Nigeria and the parent must meet eligibility conditions.
4. Submit and track: Submit the application and monitor its progress on the platform.
5. Download certificate: Once approved, the certificate can be downloaded directly. The NPC notes it can only be downloaded once after a successful application.
The Commission also clarified that birth registration for children under five remains free at NPC registration centres, while certain self-service options on the portal may attract a fee.
The VitalReg platform also covers death registration, which the NPC says will help improve population statistics and strengthen legal processes such as inheritance, insurance claims and official record updates.
Birth certificates remain essential for school enrolment, passport applications, identity verification and other official documentation, while death certificates are critical for legal and administrative purposes.
The NPC said the digital system is part of broader efforts to ensure every birth and death in Nigeria is captured accurately and securely.
