2027 Elections: IPOB Issues 14-Day Ultimatum, Threatens Boycott in South-East Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Appeal
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has threatened to boycott the 2027 general elections across the South-East and other parts of what it calls “Biafraland” if the Federal Government fails to hear the appeal of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The group issued a 14-day ultimatum in a statement released on Monday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful. According to the statement, the decision followed renewed concerns raised by Kanu’s family over the delay in hearing his appeal against his conviction and life sentence.

Powerful disclosed that Kanu had petitioned the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the President of the Court of Appeal, requesting the immediate listing and hearing of his pending cases.

IPOB accused the Federal Government of deliberately stalling the appeal process after rushing to secure Kanu’s conviction. The group warned that it would mobilize for an election boycott if government fails to act within the ultimatum period.

In the statement, IPOB said: “IPOB is giving the Federal Government 14 days to list and hear Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s appeal. If they refuse, we will consider boycotting the coming elections across Biafraland and beyond. A government that cannot face its Court of Appeal has no right to demand our votes”.

The group further alleged that the Federal Government was yet to file its respondent’s brief or appear in court to defend the conviction.

IPOB also questioned the legal basis for Kanu’s conviction on November 20, 2025, and his continued detention after nearly six years. It faulted the Supreme Court for overturning the Court of Appeal’s earlier discharge and acquittal of Kanu, arguing that the apex court exceeded its powers.

On criticism that an election boycott could lead to rigging, IPOB insisted that a collective refusal to vote would be a strong political statement that the people have withdrawn their trust in the system.
