68-Year-Old British Woman Cries Out As 31-Year-Old Nigerian Husband Disappears After UK Spousal Visa

A 68-year-old British woman, Dawn Otewell from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, has spoken out about her troubled marriage to her 31-year-old Nigerian husband, Bright Emokpae, whom she accuses of abandoning her after relocating to the UK on a spouse visa.

According to Dawn, she met Bright on dating apps Tinder and Plenty of Fish in 2021. He initially introduced himself as Brian Thomas, a professional in his 30s, but she later discovered he was actually a fashion student from Benin, Edo State, and younger than he claimed.

Despite that, she said she grew emotionally attached to him through chats and video calls.

The couple got married at a registry in Nicosia, Cyprus, on March 22, 2022. Bright then returned to Nigeria to apply for a UK spouse visa, which was later approved.

Dawn said she welcomed him at Heathrow when he arrived, but alleged that he soon became distant. She claimed he constantly asked her for money, refused to contribute to household expenses, and frequently sent money back to Nigeria.

The couple separated in October 2023 but reconciled about six months later, shortly after Dawn received a £63,000 compensation payout from a botched medical procedure.

The reunion was short-lived. Dawn alleged that Bright left again after she returned from a £2,000 Caribbean cruise with her brother shortly before Christmas 2024.

She claims she has not heard from him in about eight months after he blocked her on all social media platforms. She suspects he may now be living in Scotland, where he allegedly runs an online clothing business.

Speaking on the situation, Dawn said: “He’s done a runner and is refusing to sign the divorce papers because I believe he wants to cling on to his spouse visa.”

She also expressed fear over her estate, as she has not written a will and worries he could lay claim to her possessions if she dies before the divorce is finalized.

“I feel I’m being used,” she said.

Dawn said she is now getting help from Citizens Advice to help trace him and serve him the divorce papers.
