Deji Adeyanju Urges Tinubu to Declare State of Emergency on Fake Drugs, Demands Sack of NAFDAC, SON Heads
Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency over the growing circulation of fake and substandard drugs and consumer products in Nigeria.
Adeyanju made the call in a statement where he expressed concern over the proliferation of dangerous and counterfeit products across the country.
He demanded the immediate removal of the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, and the heads of other regulatory bodies including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), describing the situation as a complete regulatory failure.
According to him, the prevalence of counterfeit products points to a collapse of regulation in critical sectors.
“Nigerians are being exposed to dangerous products daily, from fake and substandard medicines to unsafe consumer goods, with reports of drugs being sold wholesale in the open under the hot sun. No responsible government should expose its citizens to such risks and expect mortality rates not to rise,” he said.
Adeyanju urged the Federal Government to overhaul the regulatory framework and appoint competent leadership to restore effective enforcement.
“The President must be alive to his responsibility and act decisively by removing the Director-General of NAFDAC and the heads of other failed regulatory agencies, including SON,” he stated.
He further called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s regulatory system, insisting that Nigerians should not continue to pay with their lives for regulatory failures.
His call comes amid renewed public scrutiny of fake and adulterated products, even as NAFDAC continues to report seizures and destruction of counterfeit and expired products.
