Experts Move to Tackle Nigeria’s Governance Deficit and Mismanagement
Nigeria’s governance system is set for a major review as professionals, policymakers and business leaders converge to address institutional failures, accountability gaps and leadership challenges hampering national development.

The move was disclosed in Lagos at a press briefing ahead of the 2026 Annual National Management Conference (ANMC) of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered).

Speaking to journalists, the President/Chairman of Council, Commodore Abimbola Ayuba (rtd), said the conference will focus on a critical management issue of national importance and come up with actionable solutions that will be forwarded to key stakeholders.

This year’s edition, themed “Strengthening Institutional Governance in Nigeria”, is expected to promote professional conduct, especially among public office holders, as top management executives, government functionaries, decision-makers and opinion leaders from both private and public sectors will be in attendance.

The conference is scheduled to hold from September 13 to September 15 in Lagos.

Dr. Dakuku Peterside, Fellow of the Institute and former DG/CEO of NIMASA, will serve as the Main Theme Speaker, while His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo (Telade IV), the Alara of Ilara Kingdom and Pro-Chancellor of Lagos State University, will deliver the keynote address.

Breakout sessions will be moderated by Dr. Ayodele Patrick Aderinwale, Chairman of Justrite Superstores Ltd; Dr. Babangida Albaba, former Rector of Katsina State Institute of Technology and Management; and Arch. Sonny Echono, Executive Secretary of TETFUND.

Panelists include Ms. Ayotola Jagun, Executive Director, Oando Plc; Mrs. Mercy Onuh, Principal Procurement Officer, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; and Mrs. Kai Orga, Managing Director, ARM Investment Managers. Prof. Anayo Nkamnebe of UNIZIK Business School will moderate the panel session.

Ayuba described this year’s conference as the sapphire jubilee edition coinciding with the 65th anniversary of the Institute, noting that NIM will continue to push for better management practices at both corporate and governmental levels.

He attributed Nigeria’s challenges to individual character and ethics, and called for stronger collaboration between NIM and anti-corruption agencies including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
“As we journey into the future, we will neither relent in our quest to bequeath a well-trained and productive workforce to the nation nor will we be tired until mismanagement, maladministration, corruption and other social vices which have hampered Nigeria’s development are exceptions rather than the rule,” he said.
Earlier, the Registrar/Chief Executive of NIM, Taiwo Ganiyat Olusesi, said the Institute does not wait for its annual conference to respond to national issues, but regularly reviews developments and sends recommendations to government and stakeholders, including implementation strategies and timelines where necessary.
