Fresh Disquiet Hits APC Over Campaign Council List as Stakeholders Decry Exclusion

Fresh internal concerns have emerged in the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the composition of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Some party stakeholders have faulted the list, lamenting the exclusion of several seasoned political strategists, campaign managers and government officials who played key roles in the party’s victory in 2023 and in projecting the administration since inauguration.

The stakeholders questioned whether the current structure reflects the party’s broad political base, hierarchy and the various blocs that contributed to its electoral success in 2023.

Despite the reservations, many stakeholders welcomed the appointment of a former governor and grassroots mobilizer as Director-General of the Council, describing it as a step in the right direction due to his wide political network and deep understanding of party dynamics.

However, they expressed worry over the omission of some senior government officials, former campaign leaders and top party communicators known for their experience in political messaging, media management and public advocacy.

A party stakeholder said the campaign would benefit more from a broad-based team, noting that “there is a need to make adequate use of the experience available within the party. A broad and inclusive structure will give different stakeholders a greater sense of participation.”

Concerns were also raised over the concentration of multiple directorates in the hands of a few individuals, a move stakeholders warned could overstretch them and weaken campaign efficiency. They called for equitable distribution of responsibilities among competent members.

Another issue is the need for fair representation of all major tendencies and interest groups that delivered victory for the APC in 2023, as inclusiveness would be vital to party cohesion ahead of 2027.

The stakeholders, however, expressed optimism over reports that the list is currently under review, describing it as an opportunity to address gaps and build a more acceptable and united team anchored on competence, loyalty, experience, regional balance and inclusiveness.

They urged the party leadership to sustain consultations to ensure the final council reflects the collective strength of the APC and not sectional interests.
