Greenwood, Guendouzi Suspended After Post-Match Brawl in Fenerbahce vs Lyon Clash

Fenerbahce stars Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi have been sanctioned by UEFA following the violent scenes that erupted after their Champions League play-off second leg against Olympique Lyonnais.

The Turkish side secured a 2-1 win in France on August 26, 2026, at the Groupama Stadium in Decines-Charpieu, to advance 3-2 on aggregate. Tensions boiled over after the final whistle, with both Greenwood and Guendouzi — former players of Lyon’s arch-rivals Marseille — caught up in a mass confrontation involving players and officials from both teams.

In a disciplinary decision released on Friday evening, UEFA handed Guendouzi, the former Arsenal midfielder, a four-match ban from UEFA club competitions for “insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and for violating the basic rules of decent conduct.”

UEFA added that two of the four matches are suspended for a one-year probationary period. The French midfielder was also fined €50,000 ($58,000) after being found guilty of making an offensive gesture toward Lyon supporters and provoking the post-match scuffle.

His teammate, former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, received a one-match suspended ban and a €30,000 fine for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct.”
