Insecurity: North Blamed Jonathan, Pampered Buhari – Shehu Sani

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has accused Northern elites and the general populace of living in denial over the root causes of insecurity in the North.

Sani, who was the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Kaduna Central, said this in a Facebook post on Tuesday. His comment comes after the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, was criticized by many Northerners for accusing former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, of fueling the Southern Kaduna crisis while in office.

According to Sani, Northerners are quick to blame outsiders instead of looking inward. He said the region blamed former President Goodluck Jonathan for insecurity, excused former President Muhammadu Buhari, and is now blaming President Bola Tinubu.

“If Christopher Musa had blamed GEJ and BAT for the killings, he would have been applauded. It’s said that Musa failed as a Defense chief, but all those revered as opposition messiahs were also once in office like Musa,” Sani wrote.

The former lawmaker stressed that both banditry and Boko Haram terrorism originated in Northern Nigeria before spreading to other parts of the country and neighbouring nations like Chad, Cameroon and Niger.

“The bandits and terrorists, many of whom are from our part of the country, have shed the blood of innocent people; they abducted children, raped women, extorted ransom, displaced millions and burned down the villages of our people. The orphans and widows generated by banditry and terrorism are now IDPs in our cities and refugees in our neighbouring countries,” he said.

Sani lamented that at a point in Nigeria’s history, all defence and security chiefs were from the North, yet insecurity worsened.

“We are asking for a miracle and magic we failed to perform. We don’t want to even hear that at a certain point in our tragic history, all the defence and security chiefs were from our part of the country; they met us with bandits and left us with more bandits,” he added.

He argued that rather than holding bandits, terrorists, and failed Northern leaders accountable, anger is channeled towards scapegoats. Despite nearly two decades of violence, he said, many still protect the image of leaders who failed them.

“We are patients who want our diseases to be treated and cured, but we don’t want to accept and read the lab results; we want to write our own lab reports,” Sani concluded.
