King Sunny Ade Held Nigeria’s Longest Billboard Record for 40 Years – US Mission Reveals
Legendary Juju music icon King Sunny Ade held Nigeria’s longest-charting album record on the US Billboard 200 for about 40 years, the US Mission Nigeria has revealed.

The Mission disclosed this on Thursday in its #ThisWeekinUSNigeriaHistory series on X, highlighting cultural milestones that have shaped Nigeria-US relations.

According to the Mission, King Sunny Ade achieved the feat in 1983 with his critically acclaimed album ‘Jùjú Music’, which spent 29 weeks on the Billboard 200, one of the world’s most influential album charts.

The album became the longest-charting project by a Nigerian artiste on the chart, a record that stood for roughly four decades before the global Afrobeats explosion.

The US Mission noted that his distinctive Juju sound helped introduce American audiences to Nigeria’s rich musical creativity and proved that Nigerian sounds could travel far beyond Africa.
“American audiences have long embraced the creativity and innovation coming from Nigeria,” the Mission said.
The record was finally broken in 2023 when Rema’s debut album ‘Rave & Roses’ spent 30 weeks on the Billboard 200, surpassing King Sunny Ade’s 29-week run that had lasted since 1982/1983.

Despite being overtaken, King Sunny Ade’s 1983 breakthrough remains a historic landmark — an international milestone achieved decades before Nigeria’s current Afrobeats dominance.
