Lookman Delighted To Break Goal Drought For Atletico Madrid

Super Eagles winger, Ademola Lookman, has expressed his joy after scoring his first goal of the season for Atletico Madrid in their 3-1 win over Sevilla on Saturday.

The Nigerian international, who found the back of the net in the 26th minute from his preferred left-wing role, scored Atletico’s second goal of the game at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium to help Diego Simeone’s men secure all three points.

The goal comes as a relief for Lookman, who had failed to score in Atletico’s first two league games against Malaga and Villarreal, where he was deployed as a makeshift centre-forward due to the absence of Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth — a decision Simeone later publicly apologized for.

Reacting after the match, Lookman said he was more pleased with the victory than his personal milestone.

“I am very happy with the three points, of course. We played very well today, we were very sharp in the right moments,” Lookman told Atletico’s official website.

“Good to get off the mark, of course. I am happy to win, and that is the most important thing. Top players interlinking together, playing with the same mindset, of course I am happy to play with the guys.”

In a separate interview with ESPN, the forward also responded to Simeone’s apology, praising the Argentine manager and his coaching crew for helping his development.

“Playing under him is fantastic. I am gaining a lot of knowledge and working on my improvement. Learning from him and his team is crucial for my growth and for assisting the team,” he added.

Lookman joined Atletico Madrid from Italian side Atalanta in the January transfer window, after a difficult first half of the season in Serie A. He has since settled quickly, contributing goals and assists.

The Nigerian star will now be looking to build on this performance as Atletico push for a strong campaign in the 2026/2027 season.
