OAP Dotun Calls Out Igbo Traders Protesting Chinese Retailers in Lagos

Popular Nigerian On-Air Personality, Dotun Ojuolape, known as OAP Dotun, has slammed a group of Igbo traders in Lagos who staged a protest against Chinese merchants at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex.

The traders had protested that Chinese nationals, who initially came into the country as wholesalers, have now moved into direct retail trading, selling goods to final consumers at cheaper prices. They alleged that the Chinese traders have direct access to manufacturers and resources in China, giving them an unfair pricing advantage and taking their customers.

Reacting to the development, OAP Dotun described the protesting traders as “bloody hypocrites.” He argued that competition is a normal part of business and that traders should focus on being more competitive rather than protesting others for offering lower prices.

The protest, which was captured in videos circulating online, showed traders with placards reading “Chinese must go” and insisting it was a peaceful demonstration. The Lagos State Police Command has since described the action as the handiwork of a few miscreants.

The incident has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some users supporting the traders’ concerns about local business survival, while others agree with Dotun that competition should drive better pricing and service for consumers.
