Rowe Takes Over Lookman’s Iconic No. 11 Shirt at Atalanta
English forward Jonathan Rowe has inherited the number 11 jersey at Atalanta, the number previously worn by Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman before his move to Atletico Madrid.
Rowe completed a club-record move to the Serie A side from Bologna this week in a deal worth €40m including loan fee, obligation to buy and add-ons, making him the most expensive signing in Atalanta’s history ahead of El Bilal Toure and Gianluca Scamacca.
The 23-year-old London-born forward of Jamaican descent came through AFC Wembley and Norwich City academies and made his senior debut for Norwich at 17. He previously had spells with Marseille in 2023 and Bologna in 2025, and was part of England’s squad that won the 2025 U-21 European Championship.
Speaking after his unveiling at the club’s Zingonia training ground, Rowe said he was attracted by the family culture at Atalanta, where president Antonio Percassi and CEO Luca Percassi were present.
“Atalanta is very tied to family values, and this reflects my own principles in life,” he said.
The No. 11 shirt carries huge significance at Bergamo, having been worn by Lookman during his memorable spell, including his hat-trick in the 2024 Europa League final win over Bayer Leverkusen — a feat that helped him win the CAF African Player of the Year award.
Lookman, now 28, has since taken the same No. 11 shirt at Atletico Madrid after initially wearing No. 22, following Thiago Almada’s departure to River Plate. He scored nine goals and provided four assists in 24 appearances in his first half-season in Spain.
