Trump Pledges $5,000 ‘Dividend’ to Every Adult American If Republicans Win Midterms

US President Donald Trump has promised a $5,000 payment to every adult citizen if Republicans retain control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.

Trump made the pledge on Wednesday while speaking at the Republican convention in Dallas, Texas. He said the payment would be funded from economic growth and revenue generated from tariffs.

Describing the proposal as a dividend, Trump likened it to profit-sharing given to shareholders when a company performs well.

“Because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” he said.

The former president said beneficiaries would be expected to spend the money locally to boost the US economy.

“We don’t want you going to Canada to spend the money. We don’t want you going to China, to Germany. You’ve got to spend the money in the United States of America,” he added.

Trump branded the proposed payout the “Trump Dividend” and tied it directly to a Republican victory at the polls.

“If the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000,” he said.

He claimed the initiative was made possible by economic gains under his administration and argued that Democrats would not be able to implement a similar programme because they oppose tariffs.

Trump also highlighted his administration’s “Trump Accounts” programme, which provides $1,000 for eligible children. He commended the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation for pledging $6.25 billion to support the scheme.

Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress, with Democrats in the minority. Americans will head to the polls in November to elect members of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
