U-20 Women’s World Cup: Falconets Stumble 2-0 Against Holders Spain in Group F Opener
Nigeria’s Falconets got off to a losing start at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, falling 2-0 to defending champions Spain in their Group F opener on Monday at the ArcelorMittal Park in Sosnowiec.

The Spanish side dominated possession and dictated the tempo from the blast of the whistle. Their pressure paid off early when Marisa Garcia broke the deadlock in the 13th minute to put the Falconets on the back foot.

Moses Aduku’s girls tried to fight back and stayed in the game until the break, but struggled to break down Spain’s well-organised defence.

After the restart, Spain continued to control proceedings and sealed the win in the 73rd minute through Alba Cerrato.

The defeat leaves Nigeria needing a quick response to keep their knockout hopes alive. The Falconets will face China PR on September 10 before wrapping up the group stage against New Caledonia.

It was a disappointing turn after an encouraging build-up in which Nigeria beat hosts Poland 1-0 and drew 1-1 with South Korea, with Mary Mamudu scoring in both friendlies.

Coach Aduku had said before kickoff that his team would approach the Spain game like a cup final. Nigeria, ever-present since 2002 and twice runners-up in 2010 and 2014, are still chasing a first U-20 Women’s World Cup title.
