We No Longer Have Respectable Kings in Igbo Land — Nigerian Man Laments Decline of Traditional Institution
A Nigerian man has raised concerns over what he describes as the declining standard, honour and independence of traditional rulers in Igbo land.

In a post that has sparked reactions online, the man identified as Somto Okonkwo lamented that the South-East no longer has brave and highly respected kings who once embodied the dignity of Igbo tradition.

He referenced the era of fearless monarchs, citing the famous Igbo king who welcomed Queen Elizabeth II to Nigeria and refused to bow in order to preserve his honour and dignity.

According to him, the current crop of traditional rulers have lost that independence as many are now selected and crowned by state governors.
“We No Longer Have Respectable Kings And Traditional Rulers In Igbo Land. Brave And Well-Respected Igbo Kings Like The One Who Welcomed Queen Elizabeth To Nigeria. A King Who Refused To Bow And Chose To Preserve His Honour And Dignity Are No Longer What We See Today.

“The Ones We Have Now Are Selected And Crowned By Governors, Making Them Nothing More Than Political Puppets. Just Look At How Some Of Them Disgraced Themselves Before Tinubu’s Wife In The Name Of Giving Her a Chieftaincy Title.

“This Is Not The Standard Our Forefathers Set For Us. Our Traditional Institutions Deserve Honour, Independence And Dignity,” he said.
He argued that the growing political influence in the selection process has turned many monarchs into political puppets, pointing to recent incidents where some traditional rulers allegedly disgraced themselves while conferring a chieftaincy title on the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

He called for a restoration of the core values of Igbo traditional leadership — courage, dignity, and independence from political interests.
