A Nigerian lady has sparked a debate on social media after questioning the popular wedding phrase, “You may now kiss the bride.”

The lady, who shared her opinion online, described the phrase as problematic from a feminist perspective.

“Call me a feminist extremist, but ‘You may now kiss the bride’ sounds problematic to me,” she said.

According to her, the wording of the phrase gives the impression that the groom is being granted permission to kiss the bride, rather than portraying the kiss as a mutual act between two consenting partners.

Her comment has since triggered mixed reactions online, with many users weighing in on whether traditional wedding practices and language need to be updated to reflect modern views on equality and consent.
