PANDEF Commends Tinubu on 15-Year Gas Deal for UTM FLNG Project
The Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the signing of a landmark 15-year gas supply agreement for the UTM Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) project.
The agreement, which guarantees 200 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (mmscf/d) to the facility, is considered a critical milestone for Nigeria’s first indigenous floating LNG plant.
The Wet Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement was signed during NOG Energy Week in Abuja between the NNPC/Seplat Energy Joint Venture and UTM FLNG Limited. The deal removes a major hurdle to the project’s Final Investment Decision (FID), now expected in Q4 2026.
According to PANDEF, the development will deepen indigenous participation in the oil and gas sector, attract new investments, create thousands of jobs, and drive industrialisation across the Niger Delta.
The Forum also said the project will boost domestic gas utilisation, reduce gas flaring, cut carbon emissions and expand access to cleaner cooking fuel, especially LPG, for millions of Nigerians.
UTM FLNG Group Managing Director, Julius Rone, credited the breakthrough to President Tinubu’s implementation of the Federal Government’s “Decade of Gas” initiative, noting that it shows what indigenous companies can achieve with deliberate policy support.
PANDEF added that the deal reflects the administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for major investments in the Niger Delta, stressing that empowering indigenous operators is key to unlocking the region’s economic potential and ensuring sustainable development and peace.
Beyond its investment value, the UTM FLNG project is expected to generate significant foreign exchange through LNG exports and strengthen Nigeria’s energy security.
