Uganda Mourns SC Villa Captain David Owori Killed in Robbery Attack
Ugandan football is in mourning following the death of Sports Club Villa captain, David Owori, who died after a violent street attack near his home in Kampala.
The 27-year-old defender, popularly known as “Colgate”, was ambushed on Tuesday night in the Makindye area as he approached his residence. According to witnesses, a group of suspected robbers hit him with paving stones before dispossessing him of his belongings and fleeing the scene.
Owori was first rushed to a nearby clinic and later transferred to a private hospital in Kampala, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Confirming his death, SC Villa said the club had lost more than just a player.
“We have lost more than a player – we have lost a leader, brother and friend,” the club said in a statement.
Club spokesperson Asan Kasingye added: “The player was ambushed by thugs as he approached his home, leaving him with life-threatening injuries before he was rushed to the medical facility.”
Police say an investigation is ongoing. Kampala police spokesperson, Rachael Kawala, disclosed that the crime scene has been documented and processed to preserve evidence.
“The scene of the incident has been documented and processed to ensure that all relevant evidence is collected and preserved,” Kawala said.
Owori was one of Uganda’s most prominent footballers. He captained SC Villa, one of the country’s most successful clubs, and featured for the national team, the Uganda Cranes.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) described him as a leader and inspiration to a generation, while the Cranes said the team had lost a player who carried the hopes of the nation.
Owori returned to SC Villa in 2023 after a stint in Europe and led the club to its 17th Uganda Premier League title in 2024 – their first in 20 years. His form had earned him a contract extension until 2027.
His death has sparked outrage and renewed calls for action against violent crime in Kampala, with fans, teammates and political leaders demanding justice.
