Osimhen Reveals Why He Rejected Galatasaray’s Iconic Number 9 Shirt
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has opened up on his decision to turn down Galatasaray’s prestigious number 9 jersey, opting to stick with his number 45 shirt for the new season.
Osimhen, who completed a permanent move to the Turkish champions last summer after a successful loan spell from Napoli, has become a key figure at Rams Park following a string of impressive performances.
The Nigerian international was widely tipped to take over the number 9 shirt, famously worn by star forward Mauro Icardi and regarded as a symbol for top strikers at the club. However, Osimhen chose to remain with the number 45 he has worn since his arrival.
Explaining his choice, the 26-year-old said the number has been a source of good fortune for him in Turkey.
According to a report by Turkish outlet Sabah Spor on its X handle on Thursday, Osimhen said: “I believe you will sell more shirts, but I think you will understand my perspective. The number 45 has been lucky for me at Galatasaray. I want to continue with the same number.”
Since making his move permanent, Osimhen has established himself as a fan favourite among the Yellow-Reds faithful, scoring crucial goals and leading the attack.
The striker recently opened his pre-season account in Galatasaray’s 3-3 draw with Rennes in Istanbul as the club ramps up preparations for the new campaign, where they will be looking to defend their domestic title and make a strong statement in Europe.
