Nigerian Teen Seun Ogunsakin Clinches First Grand Slam Main-Draw Victory at US Open
Nigerian tennis sensation Seun Ogunsakin has achieved a major career milestone after securing his first-ever Grand Slam main-draw win at the US Open Junior Championships.

The 17-year-old fought back from a set down to defeat 15th seed Kuan-Shou Chen of Chinese Taipei 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 in the boys’ singles first round on Sunday at Flushing Meadows.

After losing the opening set, the Aurum Tennis Academy star showed great resilience and composure to take the next two sets and book his place in the second round.

The victory is Ogunsakin’s first win in the main draw of a Junior Grand Slam, after making his debut at that level earlier this year.

The Nigerian had to come through the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw in New York, where he started with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 win over Poland’s Tymon Litwic.

The US Open marks Ogunsakin’s third straight Junior Grand Slam appearance in 2026, having previously competed at the French Open and Wimbledon.

The win over the highly-rated Chen, ranked world No.15 in the junior circuit, highlights his steady rise on the international stage.

Ogunsakin will now face South Africa’s Connor Doig in the second round on Tuesday, September 8, as he aims to extend his run and push for a quarter-final berth.
