Mourinho: Real Madrid Deserved Win Despite 1-0 Defeat To Betis
Jose Mourinho says he could not explain Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss to Real Betis despite believing his team dominated the La Liga clash at La Cartuja.

Madrid’s perfect start under the Portuguese coach came to an end on Saturday, September 6, after Troy Parrott struck in the 81st minute. Parrott pounced on the rebound after Thibaut Courtois had saved Nelson Deossa’s header.

Real had a golden chance to rescue a point deep into stoppage time when Vinicius Junior was fouled in the box, but Kylian Mbappe saw his penalty saved by Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho insisted his side did enough to win.

“Sometimes you lose and don’t know why or how to explain it,” Mourinho said. “The team played a great match. We were very dominant, the centre-backs were imperial and controlled absolutely everything.”

“A lot of offensive play and many goal-scoring opportunities. If the match ended in a draw, we would leave frustrated because we did more, so imagine how we feel with the loss. The team was solid throughout. Betis had some counterattacks, which is normal.”

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss added that Betis played for a draw and “hit the jackpot.”

“The match was Madrid’s. Betis, who played for the draw, hit the jackpot,” he said.

Mourinho said he might change his view after watching the game back, but from the touchline, he saw no reason for the defeat.

“I might change my opinion after watching the match tomorrow, but from the bench today, I don’t know why we lost. Everyone gave their all. We clearly deserved to win, but deserving doesn’t give you points,” he said.

The result leaves both Real Madrid and Real Betis on nine points after four La Liga matches.
