NDPHC Saves N30bn, Recovers 110 Abandoned Containers in 100 Days – MD

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Engr. Jennifer Adighije, says the company has saved N30 billion and recovered 110 abandoned containers and 216 packages within her first 100 days in office.

Adighije disclosed this in Abuja during an oversight visit by the House of Representatives Committee on Power led by Hon. Victor Nwokolo.

According to a statement by the Head of Corporate Communications and External Relations of NDPHC, Nazo Agim, the company also recovered about $12 million from cross-border bilateral customers in Togo and other debtors, from an outstanding debt of over $50 million.

She added that NDPHC recovered several turbines across its power plants, contributing about 470MW to the national grid.

Other achievements listed include debt recovery, digitalisation, improved procurement practices, asset restoration and completion of distribution projects.

Speaking on future plans, Adighije said NDPHC has concluded arrangements to improve power supply in northern Nigeria through the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) Phase 2, which will diversify Nigeria’s generation mix by harnessing solar and other renewable potentials in line with the Energy Transition Plan (ETP).

She noted that NDPHC currently contributes about 4,000MW to Nigeria’s installed capacity of about 12,000MW, representing about 30%. Under NIPP Phase 1, the company built 10 power plants, seven of which are commercially operational, while two are under construction and one is undergoing upgrade.

On transmission and distribution, Adighije said the company has completed 120 transmission projects, comprising 60 330kV substations, 31 132kV substations and 37 expansion projects, with transformer capacity exceeding 10,000MVA.

She however identified transmission constraints, low tariffs, inadequate market settlements, gas supply challenges, unpaid debts and vandalism as major challenges.

Adighije disclosed that NDPHC has over 1,500MW mechanically available but is only allocated about 500MW hourly dispatch, resulting in suppressed and stranded capacity that has cost the company over N300 billion. She also appealed to the Committee to intervene over N400 billion owed by Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET).

In his response, Committee Chairman Hon. Victor Nwokolo commended NDPHC management for its efforts, describing the company’s work as critical to the entire power value chain, and assured legislative support to address the challenges raised.
